APOTHEOSIS OF FALL
FOUR SONGS OF NATURE, LOVE AND DEATH

INTRODUCTION TO AUTUMN

Fall
the leaves of Autumn.
All
the dreams we dreamt of Summer-time.
Fire
the trees of Autumn.
Tire
and go to sleep and know that I'm Winter's game.

Bow
the trees of Autumn.
Now
there is coldness in the air.
Grey
the skies of Autumn.
Way
above the trees the winds will share Winter's claim.

SONG OF DEATH

The priest of the tomb
in the yellow church of Death
raises hand upon hand
on the coffin and the wreath.
Winter's grave. Box and bell.
And a dry and empty well.
Flower wall.
Last of all.
Hell.

The war and the rest,
execution, axe of law,
city lives, treaty, gun,
and the last he ever saw.
Softly grey pale disease
and the distant, silent trees,
cancerous sweat
will be met,
please.

The dry eyes of God,
begging throat and doctor's best,
doing all that we can,
come on now and take a rest,
there'll be time just for that.
Operation, put your hat
on the bed,
and it bled,
flat.

A break in the day
cut me deep and did destroy,
clean-through-crash, come-great-Nurse
with applause this lucky boy,
could be worse, like I said,

should be glad you're only dead,
age-old hags,
gentle hags.
Red.

LOVE

White hips, black blood
in a warm and pleasant flood,
red silk, slave eyes,
blazing sun and empty skies.
Love.

THE SONG OF AUTUMN

My love is like the roaring blaze of Autumn,
but it will burn low in Winter's cold and darkness.
It will be but a small flame, a tiny hope
in a world of silence and oppression,
a short flickering flame will burn in my journey
through Death's dark land, and like the star
I glimpsed far away in the silence of an Autumn evening
it will lead me on to the eternal light of Spring's resurrection.

In the love that burns for the living and the suffering,
in the passionate longing of the young heart,
you and I will meet and be as one
in union with Him who is Autumn, Spring, and life itself,
the fount of eternal love.
