Lars von Trier and 'Kingdom'
A Danish friend of mine told me about your work and I was very pleased to read the translated chapters on your site
I wonder if you could tell me what you think about another great dane: Lars von Trier and his T.V. series Kingdom
Looking forward to reading more of your stuff
To put it conservatively: I loathe and despise the Danish cinema! and I've always wondered, how in the US or any other country with a civilized movie industry any one can take these awful home movies seriously. But I think I know why.
It's very difficult to spot bad acting in a language you don't understand. When you watch a Russian movie, and it looks like everybody's falling asleep, you don't think: How boring! but: How Russian!
Or take a typical Eastern: It must be bad acting, but it sounds very convincing. Or take Kingdom, which is a translation of Riget, which is an abbreviation of Rigshopitalet, meaning General Hospital.
So the correct translation is really The General, except that's a Buster Keaton movie. So you see, the reason you like Danish movies is really very simple: You have absolutely no clue what's going on in them! I mean, even I might like a Trier movie under those circumstances
